Default Garage Painting 101

When doing a paint job in my garage I start about 2 weeks early by blowing out all the loose dust . Then about 5 days before I really start kicking some things around and blowing off real high stuff to get it out .

Then there is 2 days before painting when things start getting tight . You hang the plastic and also hang the garbage bags that are full of static electricity that will draw in fine particles .

Or you create a cheap down draft booth buy building a box and using a large furnace blower fan
( sealed for spark ) and placing it at the garage door outside barely being in the garage . When you cut the intake opening you can lay a filter over it and stop the paint particles from getting out side .

The pic of fan shows no filter in use to see how much it pulls from air .

Placing card board off to the sides will seal the bottom off . And use old blankets or what ever on top of the garage door since it is open part ways . Leave a little open area for fresh air or you can build floor mounted filters to do the same .

Your day off painting should be clean of dirt but oh yeah what about bugs . I hang one of the bug zappers a few nights in a row also to take out flying insects .

I like that idea!

Bug zappers are only effective against the bugs that are stupid enough to fly into them. I'd prefer to keep them out of the booth altogether. When We painted the '59 in Jester's garage, I (probably Elizabeth) went to the fabric store and got several yards of cheap mesh-like fabric and hung it over the walk-in door and from the bottom of the large door. Lots of air could get in, but no bugs, leaves, or dirt.

We dont have a paint booth and do a lot of trailer queen billet laden high dollar hotrods out of our 30 x 40 garage. I pretty much do the exact same thing as you are doing right down to the furnace fan. I dont have a bug zapper but havent had a bug problem, until now that I have mentioned it so I think I am going to use the Hellfish method with the mesh. Kind of like mosquito netting used in the jungles of Panama or the Philippines.
